Protect Partner Profile: Pandas International

8th May 2018

In March 2018, The Mountain launched its new “Protect” line of T-shirts, hats, mugs and tote bags featuring some of the globe’s most vulnerable, threatened or endangered animal species. There’s a higher purpose behind Protect besides just putting out jaw-dropping images of animals: The Mountain is dedicating a percentage of Protect sales back to seven non-profit conservation organizations working to ensure a future on these magnificent creatures. Today, we take a deeper look at one of those seven organizations were partnering with.

WHO: Pandas International

WHERE: Headquarters are in Littleton, Colorado, with offices globally.

THE SITUATION:Pandas are under pressure by human destruction of bamboo forests, which are cleared to make way for agriculture and human development. In addition, the 2008 earthquake decimated 25% of the bamboo in the Giant Panda’s habitat and destroyed the Wolong Panda Center, which was built to reintroduce pandas into the wild as well as provide habitat for wild pandas.

WHAT THEY DO (NUTSHELL VERSION): Pandas International fights for the preservation and propagation of the Giant Panda.

WHAT THEY DO (DETAILS): Pandas International has been focused on protecting the last remaining pandas since 1999. Their work is concentrated in providing public awareness and education, support for research, habitat preservation and enhancement, and assistance to Giant Panda Centers. Their goals include to assist with the rebuilding of the new Wolong Panda Center and Center for Disease Control in Dujianyan, China; support research projects to study disease prevention and treatment of wild and captive Giant Pandas; and aid efforts to reintroduce pandas into the wild in order to diversify the gene pool.
