Girl With a Pearl Earring draws comparisons to da Vinci’s Mona Lisa because of the singular female subject and the enigmatic expression worn by the subject. Vermeer originally titled the painting, Girl With a Turban. Turbans were a popular costume prop at the time since the intricate folds and layers of the headpiece allowed artists to display their technical skill. It was not until the latter part of the 20th century that the name was changed.
